The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of the former president's transfer to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, many his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and return him to office.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
