The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

After a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had netted only one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.
